Beginning this week, students in Lakewood near Tacoma are chopping cilantro and dicing onions during our hands-on Pure Food Kids Workshops! We’re offering the adult companion class to our kids workshop, Sound Food Uprising, at no cost to adults in the Lakewood area and can’t wait to start teaching workshops to this amazing community.
Between now and February 2019, we will reach more than 1,000 Lakewood residents, many in the same family units. The goal is to promote deep and lasting change in the community’s food-based health alongside partners including Pierce County, City of Lakewood, Clover Park School District, Boys & Girls Club of Lakewood, and the Tacoma Rainiers.
The Beecher’s Foundation will provide programming at no cost to all 4th and 5th graders at Lakeview Hope Academy and Tyee Park Elementary; to all 9th graders and DECA students at Clover Park High School; and to their parents, teachers and school staff.
The City of Lakewood and Pierce County have issued proclamations honoring the initiative, declaring October Food Literacy Month in those communities.
We’ll track the program’s project here and can’t wait to share updates as kids and families experience the class.
